When I grew up in the 60's, Jewish food was a lot rowdier than it must have been for you. On Simchas Torah, we used to get Jelly Apples, which were covered in a hard, beautiful helmut of ruby red stuff that looked like glass, and we got a zillion cavities trying to gnaw our way into it. We loved it.
